WB Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar's name chosen for Vice President candidate by BJP

PM Modi praised Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar as a "Kisan Putra." The NDA has chosen Jagdeep Dhakhar to be India's next vice president.

Digital Desk: Jagdeep Dhankhar, the governor of West Bengal and a Jat leader who has clashed with Mamata Banerjee's administration numerous times, was announced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday as the NDA's candidate for the vice presidential election, which will take place on August 6.

BJP President JP Nadda announced a meeting of the parliamentary board, the party's highest decision-making body, which was presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The deadline for submitting an election nomination is July 19.

Given that the BJP has a majority in the electoral college, which is made up of members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar's election as vice president is all but guaranteed. The BJP alone has 394 MPs, which is more than the 390 needed for a majority of the current 780 members of Parliament.

The BJP president claimed that the NDA chose Dhankhar, 71, after considering several candidates. "Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji knows our Constitution inside and out. He is also knowledgeable about legislative issues."

The Prime Minister tweeted following Nadda's briefing, "I am confident that he will be an outstanding Chair in the Rajya Sabha and direct the House's proceedings to advance national progress." Modi and Dhankhar had an earlier meeting.

Dhankhar, a first-generation professional and lawyer from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, achieved great success and started practicing law in the Supreme Court.

Dhankhar, a representative of the Janata Dal who has a contentious working relationship with West Bengal's chief minister Mamata Banerjee, served in the Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991. He held the position of central minister and was in charge of parliamentary affairs. He won a seat in the Rajasthan assembly in 1993 from the Kishanganj district. In 2003, he joined the BJP.

On August 10, M. Venkaiah Naidu's term as vice president will come to an end.

On August 6, polling will occur, results will be announced, and on August 11, the new Vice President will be sworn in.

On Saturday, Nadda hosted the party's lawmakers for dinner. To prevent even one vote from being wasted, he advised lawmakers to make sure they vote following the proper procedure. On Sunday, the party will hold a practice session for all legislators in the Capital.

The Vice President chairs the Rajya Sabha and holds the second-highest constitutional office in the nation.

According to the regulations, a Vice President who performs the duties of the President is not entitled to the salary or benefits paid to the chairperson of the Rajya Sabha and does not perform the chairperson's duties.

A secret ballot is used to elect the vice president indirectly through an electoral college using proportional representation and one transferable vote. Members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha who have been elected or nominated make up the electoral college.

A party whip does not compel members to support a specific candidate.
