Nagaland: Centre extends AFSPA in eight districts for another 6 months
The move was made by the Center after a closer examination of the state's law and order circumstances.

Digital Desk: The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 has been extended by the Center in Nagaland, comprising eight districts and twenty-one police stations. The area has been designated as a "disturbed area" for six months, beginning on April 1st, 2018, unless it is withdrawn earlier.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced in an official notification that the AFSPA has been extended in the districts of Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren in Nagaland for the following six months.

Additionally, the areas covered by 21 police stations across five districts of Nagaland—six in each of the districts of Zunheboto and Mokokchung; five in Kohima; three in Wokha; and Yanglok in the district of Longleng—have seen an extension of the AFSPA.

These 21 police stations are located in the following districts: Mokokchung district (Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-I, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem, and Anaki 'C'); Longleng district (Yanglok police station); Wokha district (Bhandari, Champang, and Ralan police stations); Zunheboto district (Ghatashi, Pughoboto, Satakha, Suruhuto, Zunheboto, and Aghunato police stations).

"Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek and Peren districts in Nagaland and the areas in Nagaland falling within the jurisdiction of i) Khuzama, Kohima North, Kohima South, Zubza and Kezocha police stations in Kohima District; ii) Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-I, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem and Anaki 'C' police stations in Mokokchung District; iii) Yanglok police station in Longleng District; iv) Bhandari, Champang and Ralan police stations in Wokha District; and v) Ghatashi, Pughoboto, Satakha, Suruhuto, Zunheboto and Aghunato police stations in Zunheboto District, are declared as 'disturbed area' under Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 for a period of six months with effect from April 1, 2023, unless withdrawn earlier," reads the notification.

The move was made by the Center after a closer examination of the state's law and order circumstances.

The state of Nagaland had eight districts and twenty-one police stations in five other districts designated as "disturbed areas" by the Central Government earlier, on October 1, 2023, for six months, by the authority granted by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (28 of 1958).

Under the AFSPA, security personnel are authorized to make an unauthorized arrest, enter a building without a warrant, and carry out other warrantless acts.
