    Cyclone Remal: Mizoram landslide death toll rises to 28, several missing
    Officials said that incessant rains on Monday and Tuesday triggered landslides at several other places in the state causing damage to more than 16 houses. 

    Digital Desk: In Mizoram, at least 28 people, including 2 minors and a pregnant woman, have been killed and several others missing in multiple landslides triggered by heavy rains as an impact of cyclone "Re-mal" in different parts of Mizoram on Tuesday, officials sources said. 

    13 people, including a 4-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, died and about 8 people were missing after a massive landslide occurred at a stone quarry in Melthum area on the southern outskirts of Aizawl on Tuesday morning.

    Of the 13 victims, 9 were locals and 4 were from outside the state, official sources said. 

    A landslide swept away a building in Aizawl’s Salem Veng killing three persons, including a pregnant woman. 

    In another incident, four people, including two non-tribal, died when landslides swept away houses in the Hlimen area on the southern outskirts of Aizawl near Melthum. 

    At least five buildings have been swept away by landslides at different locations in Falkawn village, about 15 km from Aizawl.

    One person was killed and another is still missing in the incident.
    One more person was killed at Lungsei near Aizawl when a building collapsed due to a landslide. 

    Aizawl Deputy Commissioner Nazuk Kumar said that rescue operations are underway.

    Officials said that incessant rains on Monday and Tuesday triggered landslides at several other places in the state causing damage to more than 16 houses. 

    Aizawl district was the hardest hit.

    Landslides also damaged cemeteries and more than 200 graves have been swept away at Republic veng, ITI veng, Kanan and Kulikan areas in Aizawl.

    More than 14 houses and a government quarter have also been damaged by storms in several parts of the state.

    A refugee camp and crop areas have been submerged by the inundation of the Tut river in the Mamit district.

    According to Aizawl DC Nazuk Kumar, more than 50 families have been evacuated to safer places due to the flooding of the Tlawng river at Sairang village, about 21 km from Aizawl. 

    Chief Minister Lalduhoma has announced Rs. 4 lakh each ex-gratia to the next of kin of those killed in the landslide and other calamities. 

    During a meeting with Home & Disaster Minister K. Sapdanga, Chief Secretary Renu Sharma, and other important officials on Tuesday, Chief Minister Lalduhoma said that the government has earmarked Rs. 15 crore to tackle the disaster caused by rain, landslide and cyclone Re-mal. 

    All schools have remained closed and government employees barring those engaged in essential services were asked to work from home on Tuesday. 

    Government offices and Schools across the State will remain closed on Wednesday (May 29) due to inclement weather triggered by cyclone "Re-mal".
