Meghalaya Company donated Rs 4.5 crore to Congress, Rs 50 lakh to BJP
The Star Cement Meghalaya Limited bought Rs.5 crore worth of electoral bonds, of which Rs. 4.5 crore went to the Congress and just Rs. 50 lakhs to the BJP.......

Digital desk: The fastest-growing cement firm in Eastern India, Star Cement, gave the Congress the majority of its financial support during the 2019 Lok Sabha election, while only providing the BJP with a pitiful sum.

It has been revealed that on April 20, 2019, Star Cement Meghalaya Ltd., which has its registered headquarters in Lumshnong, Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills region, purchased 14 Election Bonds.

It's interesting to note that nine days after the conclusion of the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections, the Meghalaya-based cement company paid Rs. 5 crore for the 14 Electoral Bonds.

Although pre-election analysis had indicated that Narendra Modi will return to power in 2019, Star Cement Meghalaya Limited's larger wager on the Congress rather than the BJP was unexpected.

The Star Cement Meghalaya Limited bought Rs.5 crore worth of electoral bonds, of which Rs. 4.5 crore went to the Congress and just Rs. 50 lakhs to the BJP.

According to reports, the BJP cashed the bond on April 23, but the Congress redeemed the bonds on April 22 and 23.

One of the biggest cement producers in Eastern India, Star Cement is fueled by three cement facilities situated in Lumshnong, Meghalaya; Sonapur, Assam; and Mohitnagar, North Bengal.

Star Cement is accelerating its ambitions for both brownfield and greenfield project expansion in order to get the total capacity up to 9.7 million tonnes annually by 2025–2026.

Even though some of Star Cement's promoters are supposedly related to some of the most prominent BJP figures in Northeast India, particularly Assam, the reason the cement producer chose the Congress over the BJP in 2019 is still unknown.

It seems that some BJP leaders are not pleased with Northeast India's Star Cement's rapid expansion.

Atul Bora, an Assam BJP lawmaker, attacked the Star Cement management in September of last year for demolishing large areas of forest land in his constituency.

The lawmaker called for the evacuation of the Star Cement factory from Sonapur and encouraged the government to start conservation efforts after planting trees because the forest land has a massive buildup of dust and sand.
