Mizoram records around 3346 pig deaths since January due to African Swine fever

Digital Desk: The impact of African Swine Fever (ASF) continues to devastate local pig populations in Mizoram with reports indicating a concerning rise in deaths and culling measures. As of Monday, the total number of swine deaths due to ASF has reached 3,346, while 6,540 pigs have been culled since the outbreak began.

Saitual district recorded the highest number of ASF-related deaths on Monday, with 88 pigs reported dead, underscoring the severity of the situation. Meanwhile, the Aizawl district saw the highest number of pigs culled today, with 155 animals affected.

Officials from the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department attribute the resurgence of ASF to the warm monsoon weather, noting its prevalence since 2021. They reported that 119 villages across Mizoram have been affected by the outbreak.

In previous years, ASF claimed 33,417 pigs in 2021, 12,795 in 2022, and 1,039 in 2023, highlighting the persistent threat posed by this viral disease to the state's swine population.
