Digital Desk: The picturesque area of Lachung in Sikkim's Mangan district has been struck by a landslide, leading to a significant evacuation effort to ensure the safety of tourists amidst challenging conditions. According to senior police officials, over 200 tourists have been successfully evacuated, while approximately 1,000 others remain stranded.

Superintendent of Police Sonam Detchu Bhutia informed that the evacuation process has been underway via Chungthang, with tourists being relocated to Mangan town. From there, transportation arrangements facilitated by the Transport Department are being made to transfer them to Gangtok, the state capital.

Efforts intensified on Tuesday with the successful evacuation of 150 tourists, following the rescue of 64 individuals on Monday. Today, 15 more tourists have been brought to safety, reflecting the ongoing rescue operations in the region.

The coordinated efforts involve district administrative officials, along with teams from various departments including BRO (Border Roads Organisation), SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), and dedicated volunteers. Their relentless commitment aims to ensure the safe relocation of all stranded tourists as the situation evolves.

In response to safety concerns exacerbated by property damage and road blockages caused by continuous heavy rainfall, the Mangan district administration has taken precautionary measures. District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri issued an order for the immediate closure of all government schools in affected areas until further notice, prioritizing the well-being of students.

As the rescue and relief operations continue amidst challenging weather conditions, authorities remain vigilant and prepared for further evacuations to safeguard both locals and visitors in the affected regions of Sikkim.
