SBI acknowledged that fraudulent transactions occurred and even obtained a confession.
Digital Desk: A shocking financial fraud incident took place in Meghalaya where State Bank of India (SBI) Williamnagar, East Garo Hills lost Rs 1.46 crore from its joint savings account. The fraud incident occurred in November 2024 triggering the account holder Retmilla Rongdeng Sangma to file an FIR because she suspected bank employees ran the scam. The investigation points to Easter Momin, a contractual clerk at the bank, as a key figure in the fraudulent activity.
Sangma and her sons maintained a joint savings account which was managed through SBI Williamnagar along with Nongalbibra branches. The account holders discovered on 14th November 2024 that suspicious fund withdrawals started in 22nd June, 2023 and continued until 14th November , 2024. The bank statements demonstrated Momin had received transfers and drawn cheques from the account holder's funds which were directed to Momin.
Further investigation revealed disturbing evidence about the unauthorized modification of the complainant's mobile number and account address to Momin's information. The withdrawal transaction initiated through cheques contained signatures that differed from the registered ones for the account holder therefore creating possible evidence of an inside fraud scheme.
Sangma filed an FIR before sending repeated requests while issuing a legal notice to the bank on 16th December , 2024 to demand compensation along with stolen fund restoration. SBI accepted the fraud incident when Momin provided a confession yet the bank remains incomplete in its necessary follow-up actions. The bank's admission of responsibility does not match any action to reclaim the lost funds together with punishment for those responsible.
