Digital Desk: Clashes erupted in Mawkynrew village of East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya on Monday over the construction of Ramakrishna Mission School. Curfew was also imposed in the village due to the clashes between the villagers and police personnel. According to reports, a large group of Mawkynrew villagers came together to vandalise a school property that is under construction.
The confrontation between police and residents of the village concerned everyone as it left nearly 13 people injured. Police fired tear gas shells towards the mob to calm the situation.
The mob comprising around 250 people tried to dismantle the school building and claimed that the plot belonged to a sports club. On the same day, East Khasi Hills district magistrate RM Kurbah announced the imposition of a curfew in the village to prevent meetings of 5 or more people near the construction site.
SP Vivek Syiem of East Khasi Hills district told a news agency that 11 people were injured during the clash including two women police personnel and a pregnant villager. Some of the villagers also sustained minor injuries due to the clash.
The group of protesters claimed that the site was earlier allocated to the Mawkynrew Sports Club. They alleged that the site was later allocated to the Ramakrishna Mission School without their consent, which resulted in a violent confrontation between the villagers and police personnel.
