The protesters condemned the continued implementation of a reservation system that has remained unchanged since its inception in 1977
Digital Desk: On Thursday, five major tribes of Nagaland- the Angami, Ao, Lotha, Rengma, and Sumi tribes held coordinated protests across Nagaland, demanding a long-overdue review of the state's job reservation policy. The rallies, organized by the Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy( CoRRP) committee of 5 Tribes, begin the opening phase of a bigger protest.
Despite the adverse weather, the protestors walked in their traditional dress to deliver "an ultimatum reminder" at their local Deputy Commissioners’ offices. It pointed out that the Nagaland government had not responded to a memo sent on 20th September, 2024, and also a 30-day ultimatum given on 26th April, 2025.
Those protesting condemned the continued reservation system that has not changed since 1977. Even though the policy was scheduled for assessment in 1987, it was made permanent by government directive in 1989 without ever being looked at again. CoRRP stated that non-backward tribes still do not get the advantages promised by the policy, despite ongoing assurances of change.
Despite the government asking the protesters to end the protest. However, the Angami people in Kohima kept their peaceful, resolute rally at Phoolbari. Ao Senden, Angami Public Organisation, Sumi Hoho, Lotha Hoho and Rengma Hoho sent representatives to the front of the protests.
According to the present policy, 25% of government posts are set aside for the seven northeastern tribes, and another 12% are reserved for the Chakhesang, Zeliang, Pochury, and Sumi tribes of Kiphire. CoRRP has clarified that their protest is not against the reserved tribes, but against the absence of a fair and periodic review.
If the government does not respond, the committee said it will intensify its demonstrations in the future.
