1 woman member in parliamentary panel to review Marriage Amendment Bill

Digital Desk: The parliamentary panel for the review of the Marriage Amendment Bill consists of 31 members. Out of these 31 members, only one woman will be a part of the review committee.

Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev is the sole woman in the 31-member parliamentary committee assigned to review the bill, which strives to increase the legal age of marriage for women to 21.

When contacted, Dev stated it would have been more promising if more women MPs were on the committee. "I wish there were more women MPs in the panel, but having said that, we will make certain all welfare groups are heard," Dev stated.

Resonating similar views, NCP MP Supriya Sule, raising women-centric matters in parliament, expressed that more women MPs should have been in the committee to reflect on women's issues.

Nevertheless, she counted that the chairman could invite individuals before the panel. So for more inclusive and wider conversations, he can ask other women MPs to join the panel.

Senior BJP leader Vinay Sahasrabuddhe will lead the parliamentary standing panel.

The Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill was tabled in Lok Sabha during the winter session. It was directed to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports.

The Centre is increasing the legal age of marriage for women on the advice of the Jaya Jaitly Committee that the WCD Ministry formed in June 2020.
