Patna: In a tragic incident at least 16 people have died and several have lost their eyesight within 48 hours after consuming poisonous liquor in the West Champaran district of Bihar. Reportedly, several people are battling for their lives in hospitals.

As per the report, the death has been reported from Deurawa, Jogiya and Bagahi villages in Lauria block.

Bihar Deputy CM Renu Devi said, “The investigation is underway. Officers concerned are working on it. The locals are not ready to talk about it. We are closely monitoring the situation.”

Moreover, the Bihar police said that in connection to the incident FIR has been lodged, the police took statements from about 40 people, including family members of those who died, but all of them denied consumption of the liquor.

The incident led to a sharp response from the opposition RJD with former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav putting allegation to Nitish Kumar government.

“In Bihar, thousands of people are dying every year from spurious liquor under good governance.  Under the grab prohibition, the ruling party is running parallel illegal economy of Rs 20,000 crores in Bihar.” Yadav tweeted.

Further, Yadav claimed that lakhs of Dalits and poor are lodged in jails in the name of prohibition. Police have become corrupt and tyrannical.

Earlier, in August 2016, 19 people had died in the hooch tragedy at the Khajurbanni locality of the Gopalganj district.

Notably, Bihar was declared a dry state in 2016 by the Nitish Kumar government.
