Digital Desk: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, currently on a visit to Europe, has launched a scathing attack on the government over the ongoing India-Bharat name-change controversy. Gandhi accused the government of resorting to "diversion tactics" in response to growing concerns about the newly formed Opposition alliance, I.N.D.I.A.
Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, Belgium, Gandhi expressed his support for the phrase "India, that is Bharat," which has long symbolized the diverse identity of the nation. He asserted that this dual identity accurately represents the essence of India, blending its ancient and modern facets.
However, he suggested that the government's recent actions, including President Droupadi Murmu's use of "President of Bharat" on G20 dinner invitations, indicated a more sinister motive. This has fueled speculation about the government's intentions to rename the country during an upcoming special session of Parliament.
Gandhi took direct aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of employing "dramatic new diversion tactics" whenever issues like the Adani controversy or crony capitalism were raised. He emphasized that the government's response to the name change issue is a direct result of the Opposition alliance's name, I.N.D.I.A, which he believes has struck fear into the ruling party.
"It disturbs the Prime Minister enough that he wants to change the name of the country. It's absurd," Gandhi remarked, describing the India-Bharat dual formula as a "fantastic idea."
He further highlighted the constitutional framework of India as a Union of states and emphasized the importance of fostering open and inclusive conversations among its members as critical to strengthening the nation.
Gandhi alleged that there was a concerted effort to reshape the country's future according to the BJP's vision, which he characterized as one of centralized power, concentrated wealth, and the suppression of the people's voices.
"For me, this is a battle between two visions: Mahatma Gandhi's vision of a pluralistic, inclusive India and Nathuram Godse's divisive vision," he asserted.
Addressing the sensitive issue of Jammu and Kashmir, Gandhi reiterated that it would always remain an integral part of India, adding that its status was "nobody else's business other than our own." He stressed the importance of safeguarding India's democratic institutions and preserving the voice of its people.
Rahul Gandhi's comments come at a time of heightened political tension in India, with the government's proposed name change and the formation of the I.N.D.I.A alliance both attracting significant public attention and debate. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this controversy will shape the future of India's national identity and its political discourse.
