Assam LS polls 2024: 15 crorepati candidates in fray for third phase polls

The prominence of 'crorepati' candidates serves as a reminder of the intersection between wealth and politics...

Digital Desk: As Assam gears up for the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections, a striking revelation has emerged from the candidates' affidavits: 15 out of the 47 contenders vying for seats across four constituencies are 'crorepatis'. These affluent candidates, whose assets soar into the millions, represent a diverse array of political parties.

Leading the pack of 'crorepati' candidates is AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, contesting from the Dhubri seat, with declared assets totaling a whopping Rs 155 crore. Not far behind is independent candidate Dulu Ahmed from Barpeta, boasting assets worth Rs 63 crore.

However, the scrutiny extends beyond wealth to encompass liabilities. Dulu Ahmed tops the list with liabilities amounting to Rs 11.86 crore, followed closely by candidates from BPF and Congress.

The distribution of 'crorepati' candidates across constituencies underscores the financial diversity within Assam's political landscape. While Barpeta and Guwahati each host five such candidates, Dhubri and Kokrajhar (ST) have three and two respectively.

This wealth disparity among candidates mirrors the multifaceted nature of Assam's electorate, where voters weigh a myriad of factors, including candidates' financial standings, in making their electoral choices. As the elections unfold, the prominence of 'crorepati' candidates serves as a reminder of the intersection between wealth and politics in shaping the democratic process.
