Digital Desk: Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah announced on Thursday that the party will contest the 2026 assembly elections as part of a 16-party united opposition forum. He emphasized that both the Congress and other members of the forum will continue to work on strengthening their base across all districts.

“It is certain that we will fight the 2026 state elections together with the united opposition forum. But that does not mean that the parties will sit idle. All parties will keep on working to expand their organizational base, and there is no harm in it,” Borah told reporters.

Borah also clarified that being part of a forum does not imply an equal distribution of seats in any election. Seat allocation will be based on the strength, background, and history of the constituencies of the member parties.

The opposition forum includes prominent parties such as the Assam Jaitya Parishad, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and the CPI(M).

Earlier, Borah had stated that the Congress will contest the upcoming by-elections for all five assembly seats in the state. During a three-day meeting with AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh, party leaders discussed strategies following the delimitation of assembly and panchayat seats.

The meeting also focused on decentralizing power, authorizing district and mandal-level committees to make local decisions such as distributing party tickets, with the state committee playing a supervisory role.

Discussions were held on activating the party’s disciplinary committee and ensuring it operates according to the party constitution.

Borah mentioned the formation of six committees, led by top state leaders, to address various aspects like organizational changes, training new members, and election management.

“A digital task force is being set up, too, so that we have means to ensure that our messages reach every party worker and leader,” he added.

This announcement marks a significant step in Assam's political landscape as the Congress and its allies prepare for the 2026 assembly elections, aiming to present a united front against the ruling party.
