Kolkata : While present at a press conference in West Bengal addressing the media regarding the NRC and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah said that if BJP is voted to power, then the party will implement National Register of Citizens (RC) across India and all refugees will be given citizenship.
“Refugees shouldn’t worry, only infiltrators should. Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 will come first, all refugees will be given citizenship after that the NRC will be made. First, the Bill will come then NRC. The NRC will not be for the just Bengal but for the whole country,” Shah said at a press conference.
BJP has taken the Citizenship Bill issue as their poll propaganda as well as an election promise. Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly attacked the BJP over the Bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955.
It may be mentioned that Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that the much-debated Bill doesn’t require any changes if Clause 6 of the historic Assam Accord is implemented properly. Sonowal also mentioned that the Bharatiya Janata Party will bring back the Bill if voted back to power.
