Digital Desk: The comments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a Rajya Sabha debate on Babasaheb Ambedkar have become a political hot potato, with the opposition calling for his resignation and terming the latter as disrespect towards the maker of the Indian Constitution.
On Wednesday, former Bihar Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief
Lalu Prasad Yadav called Amit Shah a ‘mad man.’ He has to have hate for Babasaheb Ambedkar; it would appear from that remark he made. We condemn this madness. Babasaheb Ambedkar is great. Shah should leave politics and go.”
Along the same lines, former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav chorused the same sentiments against Shah and the BJP, as being anti-constitutional and fostering enmity. It is our fashion, passion, and Babasaheb Ambedkar. In other words, no one will be allowed to insult him. These people are anti-Constitution; they spread hatred, and the language used in Parliament is deplorable, said Tejashwi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
The Congress alone has brought four adjournment motions in the Parliament demanding an apology and resignation of Shah. Congress MP Manickam Tagore stated: He has insulted Babasaheb Ambedkar inside the Parliament. Therefore, we call for his apology and resignation.” Another Congress MP said K. Suresh condemned Shah’s comments and brought to light the protests across the nation against the home minister.
Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were both suspended on Wednesday as Congress and other opposition parties raised an uproar over Shah’s statement. In response, the BJP accused Congress of trying to politicize the issue, stating that the government stands shoulder to shoulder for the safety of women and against the harassment. Amit Shah gave a press conference for his defense; the Bharatiya Janata Party has targeted the Congress, calling it ‘anti-Ambedkar’ and ‘anti-Constitution.’.
In replying to the Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s appeal to take his resignation over the issue, it would not alter the outcome for the Congress party, Shah said. In either case, the Congress will remain in the opposition for the next 15 years, as I stated, Shah said.
It has become a political issue, and the two factions are mobilizing, rallying round the figure of Ambedkar.
