Mariani : Known far and wide for his quirky ways, Congress MLA from Mariani constituency Rupjyoti Kurmi reached the polling booth to cast his vote draped in traditional “Xati Axomiya” Assamese attire.

The locals present at the polling booth were surprised at Rupjyoti Kurmi’s “Xati Axomiya” avatar at the polling booth. Draped in a seleng sador, dhoti and Assamese traditional gamusa, the MLA was seen standing in a queue.
Polling in five Lok Sabha seats in Assam is underway in Tezpur, Kaliabor, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur constituencies. 41 candidates, including two women and 12 independent, are in the fray for five Lok Sabha seats.
It may be mentioned, in January 2019, amid reports of “ban on black cloth or any black item for that matter” at government’s meetings, Kurmi addresses the Assam Assembly dressed in black – head to toe.
A total of 76,034,58 voters, with 38,653,34 males, 37,379,70 females and 154 voters in Third Gender category will vote from five PCs to elect their representative. 9,574 Polling Stations have been set up spread over five Assam PCs.
The results of the election will be announced on May 23rd, 2019. Around 45,950 polling personnel have been deployed in the first phase election in the five constituencies.
