Regional Committee Members Examine parts of Assam-Meghalaya Border

Guwahati: In an aim to solve the long-pending border issues, members of Assam and Meghalaya regional committees examine parts of Kamrup and West Khasi Hills districts on Friday.

A team of delegations led by the chairperson of the Kamrup regional committee and Assam Border Area Development Minister, Atul Bora and Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, chairperson of the West Khasi Hills regional committee and Meghalaya PHE Minister visited the area.

The committees visited the area ahead of Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and its Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma’s visit to Lampi on November 16.

Minister Atul Bora tweeted, “Ahead of the Hon’ble CMs of Assam & Meghalaya’s visit to Lampi on November 16 next, we visited Upper Tarabari, Gamerimura, Dobakdrop and other areas today and interacted with the villagers & representatives of local organizations to take their views and suggestions.”

Sources quoted that the regional committees of both the states were established after two meetings in August between the chief ministers of Assam and Meghalaya to discuss long-term solutions to the interstate border issue.

According to reports, MLAs Macmillan Byrsat and Kimfa S Marbaniang and senior district and police officials made up the Tongkhar-led Meghalaya delegation. In contrast, Boko MLA Nandita Das, Assam commissioner and secretary border protection and development department, GD Tripathi and senior police and district officials made up the Assam delegation.

Last month, according to the decisions taken at the CM-level meeting in Guwahati on August 6, regional committees visited atleast seven interstate border regions in Kamrup and West Khasi Hills districts.
