“Parimita will always be remembered; will erect a memorial in her name”: Sarbananda Sonowal

Majuli: Former Assam Chief Minister and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal assured Majuli residents that a memorial shall be erected at Majuli in the memory of Parimita Das, the first casualty of the Majuli boat tragedy.

“We are together with the people of Majuli in this time of grief. Parimita's tragic death has shaken us all. Our government is committed to provide all kinds of assistance to the bereaved families of the tragic Majuli incident and shall erect a memorial in her remembrance," said Sarbananda Sonowal.

Sarbananda Sonowal visited the families of the missing persons of the tragic Nimatighat boat tragedy on Friday. Sonowal reiterated that both the Centre and Assam Government are committed to complete the bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Majuli and Jorhat within the next four years and are jointly working towards it.

Union Minister for Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday undertook an inspection of the Nimati Ghat accident site and the surrounding areas by boat during the day and visited the residence of Dr. Bikramjit, one of the missing persons of the Nimatighat incident. Sonowal also met the injured who are admitted at the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.

"Nobody can play with the lives of people. Both the Centre and the state government will jointly take steps to improve the facilities for the passengers", said the Minister, who was elected to the Assembly from Majuli in 2016 and 2021.

Meanwhile, the all Assam Engineer’s Association (AAEA) demanded a complete revamping of the State’s water transport services for the safety of passengers.

The forum of graduate engineers argued that the Nimatighat incident was an example of complete failure in the traffic management where the authorised IWT officials avoided their call (to decide) on time. There are wild allegations about the practices of some officials to allow private boats to operate on prime time instead of the department run ferries for personal gains, the forum stated.
