Guwahati: The Brahmaputra Pushkar Mela 2019 kickstarted today in Guwahati. Pushkaram was organized for the first time in Assam by the Chennai based Mahalakshmi Charitable Trust in association with Purva Tirupathi Sri Balaji Seva Samithi, Guwahati.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the Brahmaputra Pushkar and Sanskritik Mahotsav. BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav performed puja on the occasion.
Around 2 lakh people are expected to visit the festival. As per information available, over 100 priests from South Indian states will conduct the puja. The Assam government will boost the tourism sector during the festival.
The Pushkaram festival is organized annually, once in 12 years along each river. Each river is associated with a zodiac sign. The river for each year’s festival is based on which sign Jupiter is in at the time. Some of the zodiac signs are associated with multiple rivers due to regional variations.
