Digital Desk: The number of toll gates in Assam could be increased again. The toll gate will be a major concern for the people of Assam at a time when prices of everything from potatoes and onions to rice have been rising. There are currently nine toll gates operating under the NHAI. The government is preparing to install 18 more toll gates in the state.
As part of such initiatives, the number of toll gates in Assam will be increased from 9 to 27. In other words, the roads of Assam will be filled with toll gates. There are many reasons why you shouldn't travel by road in Assam.
First, the price hike and skyrocketing prices of essential commodities have hit the people. There can be 18 new toll gates in Assa. The government is fully prepared to open the toll gate and has completed all the relevant procedures. As per the reports, the government may start collecting taxes through the new toll gates after Durga Puja.
The nine toll gates which are running the state: Kokrajhar (Patgaon Toll Gate), Bongaigaon (Dahalpara Toll Gate), Nalbari (Galia Toll Gate), Kamrup (Madaanpur Toll Gate), Nagaon (Raha Toll Gate), Hojai (Mikirrati Gao Gaon Toll Gate), Dima Hasao (Mandardisa Toll Gate), and Cachar (Balacherra Toll Gate).
The government has been collecting toll taxes day and night through the nine toll gates. According to the Union Road Transport Ministry, Rs 488 crore has been collected from the people of Assam through these toll plazas so far. The Union Road Transport Ministry has set a target of Rs 45 crore annual tax collection from Madanpur toll gate in Kamrup. The government also targets to collect Rs 33.59 crore annually from the Raha toll gate and Rs 28 crore annually from Dahalpara toll gate.
The NH Authority said five new toll gates have now been completed in Assam. These include the toll gates at Rangamati in Dergaon, Kalia Bhomora in Tezpur, Biswanath, Pathali Pahar in Lakhimpur and Gigibil. It may be mentioned that the tender process for the toll gates has also started.
The toll fee has been increased at every toll gate in Assam since April The Union Ministry of Road Transport had increased the toll tax by 15 per cent. The toll at Nazirakhat toll gate was increased from Rs 125 to Rs 135.
The toll rate for 2-axle trucks and buses has been increased from Rs 445 to Rs 455 for a single journey.
If all the toll gates are operational shortly, the people of the state will have to pay taxes at a total of 27 toll gates to travel from one end of Assam to the other.
