Guwahati : The CBI court on Thursday convicted three persons on charges of embezzling National Horticulture Board (NHB) funds.

As per reports, the three convicted were indulged in fraudulently releasing subsidy money of Rs 37 lakh to “beneficiaries” for cultivation of horticulture crops.

The convicted persons are NK Chaurasia, Assistant Director, National Horticulture Board (NHB), Guwahati, Chanam Basanta Kumar Singh, former Branch Manager, Manipur Rural Bank, Imphal and Haobijan Shamu Meitei, proprieter of M/S Shamu Offset Printing Press.
As per the Assam Tribune report, the CBI upon receiving some source information had launched their preliminary investigation in 2005.
Charges against three officials for corruption in Horticulture Department
NK Chaurasia had reportedly released the subsidy cheques against 25 beneficiaries through fraudulent means under “Development of Commercial Horticulture through Production and Post Harvest Management” scheme amounting to over Rs 37 lakh by producing fake sanction letters and inspection reports.
The three of them are prosecuted under sections 120B/420/409/468/471 of the IPC, section 13(2) and section 13(1)(d) of the PC Act, 1988.
The Judgement was delivered by CBI Special Judge S Bora.
Convict NK Chaurasia and Chanam Basanta Kumar Singh are sentenced with imprisonment of five years and slapped with a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Shamu Meitei has been sentenced with 2 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine.
