Digital Desk: A police spokesperson said today that five people were arrested in Assam's Nagaon and Morigaon districts for allegedly selling SIM cards to Pakistani operatives.

Numerous mobile phones, SIM cards, and other incriminating documents were seized, he added, including a smartphone used to transmit defence intelligence with a foreign embassy.

As per Assam Police spokesperson Prasanta Bhuyan, the arrests were made during a Tuesday night operation based on intelligence from the Intelligence Bureau and other sources.

"There were reports that roughly ten people from these two areas were involved in fraudulently obtaining SIM cards from various service providers and giving them to some Pakistani agents, thus acting against the nation's integrity and sovereignty," he said.

He stated that five of the accused were apprehended on Tuesday night.

Ashiqul Islam, Bodor Uddin, Mijanur Rahman, and Wahiduz Zaman, all from Nagaon, and Baharul Islam, from Morigaon, were arrested.

18 mobile phones, 136 SIM cards alleged of being obtained for fraudulent purposes, one fingerprint scanner, one high-tech CPU, and certain papers such as birth certificates, passbooks, and photographs were recovered from the arrested people and the homes of the other five absconding suspects.

During questioning, it was discovered that Ashiqul Islam was using a mobile phone with two IMEI numbers, from which he made a WhatsApp call, sharing defence intelligence with a foreign embassy.

"That particular mobile phone was discovered in his possession. Additional apprehended individuals were also discovered to be technically involved in this relationship. A detailed interview with IB officers is currently underway" Mr Bhuyan stated.
