Guwahati: Assam Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Thursday welcome the mainstreaming of as many as 644 militants belonging to various outfits, who laid down their arms today in the GMCH auditorium in Guwahati city.
As many as 644 militants from 8 different banned insurgent outfits have surrendered in Assam along with 177 arms, the police chief said. “Today is a historic day for Assam…we are moving past a period of disturbance to an era of peace”, Mahanta said. He further thanked the militants for joining the peace process and hoped for a brighter future for the land and its people.
The DGP also thanked the Assam police personnel for their untiring efforts, and their “sincerity” and their “follow-up” to embrace the militants into the mainstream.
“Today, the militants have laid down their arms in front of the Chief AK-47, HK, MQ, along with hard-crafted weapons have been submitted…each firearm is important for us, as only a single bullet is required to take a life”, said top cop Hiren Chandra Nath, the surrender and rehabilitation of militants for surrendered militants.
It may be mentioned here that militants from several groups, such as NDFB (S), KLO, NLFB, among few who have joined the peace agreement process with the government.
