Angkita Dutta, the face of Congress GenNext

Guwahati: Armed with a BA (Honours) in Political Science from Delhi University, a law degree from the Faculty of Law, Delhi University, masters degree in women and gender studies from IGNOU and a PhD in Human Rights from Indian Institute of Human Rights in the year 2011, Angkita Dutta’s illustrious academic career followed with her advent in the political stronghold, deems a wind of change in the Congress party which had been lately witnessing several political changes.

By embarking on a path less walked upon, and where dynasty was not only her USP, Angkita Dutta had a responsibility of taking forward a legacy that her father had constructed during his tenure as the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and as the minister of state for Transport, Industries and Public Enterprises.

Sri. Anjan Dutta actively participated in the Congress organisational matters since 1978 and remained as one of the founder Youth Congress members in Assam. After holding various organizational posts at the grassroots level during difficult and adverse times like the Assam Agitation over foreigners issue during the period 1979–1985. Pleased about the organizational abilities of Sri Dutta, Late Rajiv Gandhi personally instructed the then IYC President Sri Ramesh Chennithala to appoint Sri Dutta as the President of Assam Pradesh Youth Congress in the year 1989. As the PYC President Sri Dutta diligently performed the assigned responsibilities during the crucial period when ULFA was targeting and killing Congressmen. He was largely successful in mobilizing the youth to shun the path of hatred and violence and could also secure the Congress nomination to a record number of 19 Youth Congress members during the 1991 Assembly elections. The party regained power in 1991 elections and Sri. Dutta who contested and won from Amguri LAC, the traditional anti Congress stronghold was made a Minister in the year 1992 in the Hiteswar Saikia led Government. He joined the Council of Ministers in Nov. 1992 till May 1996 and the portfolio held was that of Minister of State (Ind) Town and Country Planning Public Enterprises, Irrigation & Hydro-Carbon Development, Assam. He served as the chairman of the Employment Review Committee of Assam Legislative Agency in that year. Dutta also served as a member of the Assam Agricultural University.

Regarded as a stalwart of the State Congress party and one who revolutionized Assam’s transport sector, the passing away of Anjan Dutta was a major blow to the state Congress committee, whose dynamic career in politics is now being taken forward by Angkita Dutta, his daughter. Angkita Dutta first contested election in 2016 from Amguri constituency and lost the battle against Prodip Hazarika from AGP party. Angkita has served as Vice President of Assam Pradesh Youth Congress.

Young, energetic and bolstered with the GenNext look, Angkita Dutta’s foray into politics may not be old, but her appointment as the new president of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress, may prove her caliber and her achievement with which she will battle out on the political sphere as the next face of the grand old party of the nation, with the support of the youth.

Angkita Dutta’s accomplishments on the political front has just begun, as she looks forward to steer ahead the party and the youth of the nation under her leadership and pragmatic thought.
