Another blow to Assam Congress! Three more leaders quit party ahead of LS Polls

Digital Desk: Three more senior Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) leaders have reportedly resigned from the party's primary membership ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, giving yet another blow to the long-standing party.

The three leaders are Kaustav Borkotoky, Vice-President of the Tinsukia District Congress; Amlan Parashar, General Secretary of the Youth Congress; and Manisha Baruah, General Secretary of the Tinsukia District Congress.

As of the time this report was filed, the cause for their departure from the party is still unknown, but rumors are that the three will be joining the ruling BJP.

Pronab Kumar Baruah, the president of Tinsukia District Congress, was previously expelled by the APCC due to allegations that he participated in actions that were thought to be harmful to the party's objectives.

Later, in front of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Baruah joined the BJP with prominent Congress leader Mahesh Moran and Thomas Baruah, as well as former APCC general secretary Birinchi Neog.

In recent times, there have been multiple defections from both the Congress party and other opposition groups. Among them is Rana Goswami, a former working president of the Congress party, who joined the BJP along with 1,500 of its employees.

Furthermore, the state spokesperson and vice president of the AAP's Assam unit, who were both key members, resigned. Citing discontent with the national and state leadership, vice president Jitul Deka and state spokeswoman Susanta Kumar Nath have resigned from their positions.

 

AAP chief Kamal Kumar Medhi decided to join the BJP as well. 

Other changes include the following: former Assam Youth Congress President Angkita Dutta, Congress leader from Sipajhar Kuldip Barua, former Congress MLA from Khumtai constituency Bismita Gogoi, former president of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) Dipanka Kumar Nath and former AASU vice-president Prakash Das.
