Globally, plastic pollution is causing harm to human health, marine habitats, and wildlife...
Digital Desk: The Assam state government, under the direction of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has made a big contribution to environmental conservation by announcing a ban on single-use plastic water bottles with a carrying capacity below one liter.
This prohibition will come into effect on October 2, marking a significant step in the state's move toward a greener and more sustainable future.
The ban is an integral part of Assam's dedication to eliminating plastic waste and its harmful impact on the environment.
But is it sufficient? What about the plastic bags used in the markets? The environment will be less harmful if the use of plastic bags will be banned. What will be the government's step in those in the use of polythene or plastic bags?
To combat the major environmental and ecological problems caused by the widespread usage of plastic, the Nagaland government already banned single-use plastic (SUP) in the state.
Additionally, it banned the production, importation, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of earbuds with plastic sticks, balloons with plastic sticks, flags with plastic poles, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, and decorations made of polystyrene (Thermocol).
Moreover, plates, cups, glasses, and cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straws, and trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) banners less than 100 microns, stirrers have also been prohibited.
The Nagaland government also announced that if anybody is found using plastics would have to pay penalties, the government said that inspections would be conducted at regular intervals, and defaulters would be penalized heavily for the offense.
Globally, plastic pollution is causing harm to human health, marine habitats, and wildlife. So, it's high time for the Assam government too to take steps not only to ban water bottles but also the use of different plastic materials.
