Guwahati: Assam saw a high voters turnout on Sunday during the by-polls to five assembly constituencies - Thowra, Gossaigaon, Mariani, Bhabanipur and Tamulpur.
According to sources, the ruling BJP has fielded candidates in three seats in Assam leaving the other two to alliance partner United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). The Congress has fielded its nominees in all the five seats and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) – ots former allies – are contesting in two and one seats respectively.

The by-polls were held in five seats in Assam, four in West Bengal, three each in Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, two each in Bihar, Karnataka and Rajasthan, and one seat each in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Mizoram and Telangana, stated reports.
It maybe mentioned here that a total of 31 candidates are in fray for the elections, whose results will be announced today. The first-round of vote counting is underway in five assembly constituencies of Assam.
As per the latest reports, the first round results of Bhabanipur LAC are as follows: UDF-204, BJP-5754, Congress - 598. While in Thowra LAC, BJP's Sushanta Borgohain is advancing with 2736 and Raijor Dal's Dhoijyo Konwar has received 1479 votes.
