Digital Desk: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Saturday (June 10, 2023).
The ministers are meeting to talk about the situation in Manipur, which is currently rife with violence.
The Supreme Court on Friday rejected an urgent listing of a plea seeking the suspension of internet services in the violence-torn state of Manipur since May 3, citing that the High Court is seized of the matter.
"High Court is seized of the matter. Why are you repeating it? Let it come before the regular bench," said a vacation bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal.
Notably, the internet ban was implemented on May 3 and is still in effect.
The violence in Manipur between Hindu Meiteis and tribal Kuki Christians erupted following a protest organized by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3.
For more than a month, violence has engulfed the whole state, forcing the Central government to deploy paramilitary forces to bring the situation under control.
Earlier, the Supreme Court expressed concern about the loss of life and property in Manipur during the unrest between the Meitei and Kuki groups and emphasized the importance of taking necessary measures to restore normalcy there.
On March 27, the High Court directed the State to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list.
