Assam CM Sarma ready to resign if single new people enter the state under CAA
CM declared that it is useless for people to come out on the street and protest and that everyone has the right to apply for citizenship...

Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that he is prepared to step down if a single new individual enters the state under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, recently spoke with the media about matters concerning the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

He declared that it is useless for people to come out on the street and protest and that everyone has the right to apply for citizenship under the CAA. Applications can be made online from home.

He added that, although he had earlier guaranteed that those responsible would be identified soon, he had previously abstained from commenting on the tragic loss of five lives during the CAB protest.

Sarma also made an effort to dispel myths about the CAA, promising that only people who had been in India before 2014 would be permitted to apply and that no new people would be allowed to enter Assam under the Act.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also said that apart from people who have applied for NRC no one can enter Assam.

"If a single new person enters Assam, I will resign as the chief minister, " said Sarma.

He added that not many people would apply for citizenship since few would identify as foreigners when doing so.

The Chief Minister threatened to join the protests if there were more than 20 lakh applications. Concluding, he pledged that all application-related data would be accessible in a timeframe of 45 to 60 days.

The central government stated on March 11 that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would be implemented, marking a significant move ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was not enforced until after the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act's regulations were made public.

Following the announcement, the Ministry of Home Affairs disclosed that a web gateway has been made available for the sole purpose of online application submission.
