    Assam Child Marriage Crackdown continues: 2,789 held so far

    Digital Desk: The number of arrests in Assam in connection with child marriage cases has risen to 2,789, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday.

    The Assam Chief Minister, who has been updating the data on social media on a daily basis, stated that the number of arrests for violations of child marriage laws in the state had increased from 2,666 the day before. This represented an increase of 123 arrests.

    "Now total arrest - 2789," CM Sarma wrote on Twitter. "The crackdown is still ongoing."

    It should be noted that CM Sarma announced yesterday that 2,666 arrests had been made in the case across Assam. This is up from 2,441 arrests on February 6.

    The Assam Chief Minister took to Twitter to announce the arrests. "Our crackdown on child marriage continues," he wrote, "with 2,666 arrests made so far."

    "The fight against this social scourge will continue. "We seek the people of Assam's support in our fight against this social crime," he added.

    This comes as the Assam Police Department's massive crackdown on child marriage cases across the state enters its eighth day. The police action, which included arrests of those involved in underage marriages, was carried out on the chief minister's direct orders.

    As of Sunday, February 5, the total number of arrests in Assam was 2,278. According to Assam police, 139 people were arrested in Biswanath, 130 in Barpeta, 126 in Dhubri, 123 in Baksa, 117 in Bongaigaon, 101 in Nagaon, 94 in Kokrajhar, 85 in Kamrup, and 84 in Goalpara and Udalguri districts.

    The manhunt began on February 3rd, in response to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's directive to put an end to child marriage and nab accused.

    Meanwhile, the Assam Chief Minister has stated that the crackdown on child marriage will continue until the state assembly elections in 2026.

    A total of 4,074 cases related to child marriage were registered by the police. The CM had directed the police to carry out a probe as he had got inputs about child marriage being rampant in the state.
