Digital Desk: IIT Guwahati student Tauseef Ali Farooqui was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court today after being detained on allegations of having ties to the terrorist organization ISIS.
Farooqui was presented before the court by the police, seeking 14-day custody. He was then remanded to 10-day custody under the Special Task Force (STF).
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed earlier in the day that an IIT Guwahati student had been arrested due to his association with the terrorist organization ISIS. According to Sarma, of the two students who are suspected of being ISIS sympathizers, one has already been taken into custody, and the Assam police are scheduled to apprehend the other today. The Chief Minister claims that both students have become radicalized and have sworn loyalty to ISIS.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed grave concern over the matter, saying that both students are thought to have ties to ISIS and are from Delhi's Batla House.
The latest arrest comes after Tauseef Ali Farooqui, an IIT Guwahati final-year biotechnology student, was detained by the Assam Police on March 23 on suspicion of having ties to ISIS. Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh confirmed this arrest.
The most recent detainee, a fourth-year student studying biotechnology, had sparked suspicions with his alarming social media posts and emails declaring his desire to join ISIS. His disappearance from the campus of IIT Guwahati raised immediate worries and prompted a massive search and rescue effort.
The student, who was originally from Delhi, was found in Hajo, which is around 30 km away from Guwahati and was taken into custody right away to be questioned, according to police sources. His radicalization and affiliation with ISIS were exposed, and this information has caused a stir in both intellectual and police enforcement circles.
This occurs against the backdrop of increased alertness after ISIS India chief Haris Farooqi was apprehended in the Dhubri district, purportedly after crossing over from Bangladesh.
