Assam government moves to abolish non-essential vacant posts in all departments

As per a memorandum issued by the personnel department, posts will be eliminated across all departments of the Government of Assam.

Digital Desk: The Government of Assam's personnel department has declared that several open positions that have been determined to be unnecessary in the modern era of administration will be removed as soon as possible.

According to sources, after the e-Office is implemented, up to 50% of the non-essential roles will be eliminated. This new decision will result in the elimination of many Grade-III, Grade-IV, and computer operator posts.

As per a memorandum issued by the personnel department, posts will be eliminated across all departments of the Government of Assam.

In the memorandum dated July 20, the decision was made as the e-Office and e-mode of administration, which enable better and more effective governance, was being implemented.

"In the new age of administration and governance, the Government of Assam has given more impetus for processing the Official matters in a more scientific, systematic and time-bound manner for efficient public service delivery. The introduction of the e-Office and other e- mode of administrative measures have made some posts non-essential in the Departments due to their under-utilization in the present context. Those non-essential vacant posts of the Departments are required to be abolished regularly and the Departments will take necessary steps for abolition of the non-essential vacant posts in consultation with the Finance Department," the memorandum read.

In the meanwhile, the elimination of the roles is expected to result in the creation of new critical positions that will be formed in conjunction with the state government's personnel and financial departments as needed.

As an alternative, the Department may, in conjunction with the Finance Department and the Personnel Department, create new critical and need-based posts if absolutely necessary. To this end, the Departments shall regularly conduct exercises to identify non-essential postings and assess any need for essential job creation. The communication further stated that going forward, the administrative departments shall only request candidates for important empty or new positions from the Assam Public Service Commission, Recruitment Board, or Recruitment Commissions established.
