Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that his government will grant Rs 300 crore financial assistance to Assam Medical College (AMC) for infrastructure development.
On the occasion of the Dibrugarh medical institute’s platinum jubilee celebrations, CM Sarma paid tribute to British philanthropist Dr John Berry White and Assam’s first chief minister Gopinath Bordoloi for their contributions in establishing AMC.
He noted that throughout the course of the past 75 years, the Assam Medical College (AMC) has produced several doctors who are currently leaders in their respective fields.
"The state government would grant Rs 300 crore to AMC for the development of teachers' quarters and student hostels," Sarma said.
The CM declared that his government is committed to giving AMC the necessary support as it develops into a cutting-edge research facility equipped to handle modern diseases.
Further, he praises AMC for upholding its rich past in medical education and care and urged the college's administration to begin its growth and development in accordance with its heritage.
The chief minister asked AMC to collaborate with the state government and IIT-Guwahati on "high-end" medical research.
On this occasion, Sarma honoured a 1947- batch alumnus, Kamakhya Prasad Chakraborty, who was also present at the programme.
Moreover, he issued a commemorative AMC platinum jubilee postage stamp.
In honour of the British benefactor, the CM encouraged the vice chancellor of Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences, which includes AMC and other medical colleges, to institute a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh for the best MBBS graduate of the year.
CM Sarma also flagged off nine advanced life support ambulances donated by ONGC as part of its CSR initiatives.
