Digital Desk: The Assam government has embarked on a significant initiative to renovate and enhance the iconic Rang Ghar in Sivasagar, marking a pivotal moment in the preservation of the Ahom dynasty's architectural legacy. The Rang Ghar, a symbol of Assam's rich heritage, is set to receive a much-needed facelift, transforming it into a prominent fixture on the World Tourism Map.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will lead the groundbreaking ceremony, known as bhoomi pujan, for the Rs 124 crore beautification project of the Rang Ghar campus. The ceremony signifies the government's commitment to preserving indigenous monuments and traditions, a cornerstone of its cultural agenda.

Constructed in 1744 A.D. by Swargadeo Promotta Singha, the Rang Ghar stands as Asia's first amphitheater, boasting an iconic octagonal base and a two-story structure. Historically, it served as a royal sports pavilion where Ahom kings and nobles spectated traditional games like buffalo fights, particularly during the Rongali Bihu festival at Rupahi Pathar.

The renovation project encompasses a vast area, with land acquired from residents to ensure the preservation of the heritage site and prevent encroachment. The total project area spans 83 bighas, including government land and acquired patta land, underscoring the magnitude of the endeavor.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has underscored the government's commitment to safeguarding tangible heritage sites in Sivasagar, including Rang Ghar. The comprehensive plan includes the construction of a state-of-the-art auditorium, gallery, MP theatre, and a heritage village, offering visitors a glimpse into Assam's rich cultural tapestry.

Moreover, the renovation initiative aligns with the broader strategy to develop and protect other significant sites such as Charaideo Maidam near Sonari town and Lachit Maidam in the Jorhat district. The aspiration to include Charaideo Maidam in UNESCO's list of world heritage sites underscores the government's dedication to preserving Assam's historical landmarks.

The revitalization of Rang Ghar is poised to invigorate tourism, attracting visitors from across India and around the world. It presents an opportunity for enthusiasts to delve into the grandeur of the Ahom era, immersing themselves in its vibrant history and cultural heritage.

However, the Rang Ghar renovation project epitomizes the Assam government's unwavering commitment to honoring and revitalizing the state's historical landmarks. As the restoration efforts unfold, the iconic structure is poised to reclaim its rightful place as a beacon of Assamese identity and pride, beckoning travelers to embark on a journey through time and tradition.
