    Assam govt to bear medical expenses of Padma Shri Birubala Rabha's cancer treatment


    On April 22, 2024, Birubala Rabha was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) State Cancer Institute. Doctors said that Rabha is in the third stage of cancer.

    Digital Desk: Assam government has made the decision to bear the expenses for Padma Shri recipient and human rights campaigner Birubala Rabha's medical care. She is currently receiving treatment at the State Cancer Institute in Guwahati. 

    Following his Saturday visit to the State Cancer Institute and assessment of her condition, Assam Cabinet Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary made this announcement. Regarding her care, he spoke with the doctors.

    Taking to platform ‘X’, Patowary wrote, “On the direction of Hon'ble CM Dr. @himantabiswa, today visited the State Cancer Institute, Guwahati and took stock of the health of renowned social worker Smt Birubala Rabha who is undergoing treatment there and interacted with the doctors regarding her treatment. I also visited veteran actress of Assamese cinema Smt Vidya Rao who is undergoing treatment at GMCH and enquired about her health. wishing them speedy recovery. As per Hon’ble CM’s direction, State Government will bear the expenses of their medical treatment."

    Reportedly, the well-known social worker's condition worsened and she was admitted to the intensive care unit on May 4. But according to reports today, her health is starting to somewhat improve.

    It should be noted that Indian activist Birubala Rabha spearheaded extensive efforts opposing the practice of witch-hunting. She is the director of Mission Birubala, an organization that disseminates information opposing witch hunts. Her contribution to the enactment of the 2015 Prevention of and Protection from Witch Hunting Act by the Assam government was significant. She received the esteemed Padma Shri award in 2021 from the Indian government in recognition of her noteworthy accomplishments in the field of social service.
