Assam govt to soon bring law for life imprisonment in ‘love jihad’ cases, says CM Sarma

Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared on Sunday that the state government will soon implement a law mandating life imprisonment for those convicted of 'love jihad'. This announcement, made during a BJP state executive meeting, aligns Assam with similar proposals from Uttar Pradesh.

In his speech, Sarma emphasized that individuals found guilty of 'love jihad'—defined as deceitful romantic relationships where one's religion or identity is concealed—will face severe legal repercussions. The proposed law aims to penalize those who exploit interfaith relationships through deceit, addressing concerns over fraudulent romantic engagements.

This legislative move follows Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's recent proposal to introduce lifetime imprisonment for similar offenses.

The Uttar Pradesh government is also set to amend the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion (Amendment) Bill, strengthening legal measures against deceitful religious conversions.
