Digital Desk: Assam government under its new tribal land policy will allow a tribal to hold 50 bighas of land, up from the existing limit of eight bighas.
The new policy has been announced by Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. The CM said that it will be launched on October 2 in Basundhara Phase 2, which would increase the land holding of a tribal person from eight bighas to 50 bighas.
Additionally, it is said that the government talks with tribal organizations and builds tribal settlements with viewing areas.
"Even if the Tribals settled on government lands are evicted for some reason, they will receive compensation from the government," the minister added.
It may be mentioned that the 2011 Census reported that Tribals constitute 12.4 percent of Assam's 3.12 crore population, who reside mostly in western Assam.
