Among the constellation of luminaries, two figures from Assam stand tall, epitomizing resilience, innovation, and dedication in their respective domains, breaking stereotypes and inspiring generations.

Hathi ki Pari: Parbati Baruah - India's First Female Elephant Mahout

At 67, Parbati Baruah, lovingly called "Hathi ki Pari," etched her name in history as India's first female elephant mahout. For over four decades, she has been at the forefront of mitigating human-elephant conflicts, inheriting the skills from her father at the age of 14.

Parbati's dedication and application of scientific methods have aided three state governments in managing conflicts and providing sanctuary for rogue tuskers.

Her selfless commitment earned her the prestigious Padma Shri in Social Work (Animal Welfare), an accolade celebrating her unwavering devotion to the pachyderms and communities affected by their presence.

Sarbeswar Basumatary: Chirang ke Krishi Chiraag

Sarbeswar Basumatary, fondly known as "Chirang ke Krishi Chiraag," adds another feather to Assam's cap with his Padma Shri in Others (Agriculture). Rising from a humble background, Sarbeswar's journey from a daily wage laborer to a pioneering farmer exemplifies grit and determination.

Embracing integrated farming, he diversified his crops, including coconuts, oranges, and maize, empowering his community with knowledge and resources.

Despite the absence of formal education, Sarbeswar's ingenuity and generosity have transformed him into a beacon of hope and innovation in the agricultural landscape.

In the tapestry of India's cultural and social fabric, Assam's Padma awardees 2024, Parbati Baruah and Sarbeswar Basumatary, shine as symbols of perseverance and excellence. Their stories transcend boundaries, inspiring a new wave of change and fostering pride among the people of Assam and beyond.
