Assam: Rabha Student Union protests, block highway demanding justice for deceased SI Junmoni Rabha

Digital Desk: Several members of the All Rabha Student's Union (ARSU), Sixth Schedule Demand Committee (SSDC), All Rabha Women Council (ARWC), Rabha Sahitya Sabha, and other sister organisations blocked the National Highway 17 in Sakhati and Bamunigaon in Kamrup rural District on May 24 to demand justice in the death of SI Junmoni Rabha.

Despite police impediments, Rabha activists sat on NH 17 for half an hour and screamed numerous slogans against the state administration, Nagaon Police, and former Nagaon Superintendent of Police Leena Doley.

"We stage a protest seeking justice in the death of SI Junmoni Rabha, and the investigation must be done by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) rather than the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)," said Kabita Rabha, Secretary, ARWC. On May 19, we protested for a CBI probe into this case, and the Assam Chief Minister also announced a CBI investigation. However, the state government has yet to turn over the matter to the CBI."

"We are all shocked by this kind of matter, and we now suspect that there is some mystery that the government has not yet commissioned the CBI to investigate," Kabita Rabha remarked.

Kabita Rabha also urged the Assam government to detain Sub Inspector Abhajyoti Rabha and question him about the death of SI Junmoni Rabha.

"The state home department has not taken up the case investigation expeditiously," said Pradip Rabha, Secretary of ARSU. Junmoni Rabha's mother filed a written complaint against several police officials, but no action has been taken against them. If that happens to ordinary people, the police will investigate."

According to Ashok Rabha, Secretary of the SSDC, SI Junmoni Rabha's death was not an accident, but rather a strange murder. SI Rabha worked for SP Leena Doley. Even though SP Leena Doley and her police team are investigating the matter, they want to portray it as an accident.

"However, we all nine Rabha organisations will continue to protest until the justice of SI Junmoni Rabha is served," Ashok Rabha remarked.

ARWC Secretary, Kabita Rabha also urged Assamese to light clay candles on Friday, May 26th evening in honour of SI Junmoni Rabha's commemorative ceremony.
