Digital Desk: What initially began as an allegation by the opposition against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has now escalated into a full-fledged political showdown between CM Sarma and Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi. The Opposition initially claimed that a firm owned by CM Sarma's wife, Rinki Bhuyan Sharma, received a grant of ₹10 crore from the central government under a subsidy scheme, a claim vehemently denied by the Assam CM, sparking a political firestorm.

The controversy reached new heights when Gaurav Gogoi presented evidence to support his claim, citing a response given by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in Parliament. According to this response, Pride East Entertainments Private Limited, a media company headed by CM Sarma's wife, had been allocated ₹25.877 crore under a central initiative aimed at boosting investment in Assam to support local industries. Earlier, Gogoi shared a screenshot from the Union Food Processing Ministry's website indicating that the same company had been approved a grant of ₹10 crore out of the ₹25.877 crore sanctioned amount under the Centre's Kisan Sampada scheme.

In response to Gogoi's revelations, Sarma reiterated his stance, vehemently denying that either his wife or her associated company had received any funds from the central government. He went further, stating his willingness to accept any punishment, including retiring from public life, if concrete evidence was presented against his claims.

"The reply itself clarifies the fact that the Government of India has not released any funds to the mentioned company," CM Sarma asserted.

Gogoi, in a subsequent post, posed a question, "Is Hon’ble Chief Minister complaining to Union Minister Piyush Goyal?" He pointed out that Sarma's statement seemed to imply that Piyush Goyal had only approved the grant but had not released the funds. Sarma responded with the same fervor, reaffirming his previous assertions.

Gogoi then challenged Sarma to respond to the adjournment notice issued by Congress MLAs in the assembly regarding the matter, stating, "instead of typing on Twitter (X)." Sarma, however, rebuffed Gogoi's advice, asserting his independence, "Whether I decide to go to the assembly or a court of law against you, I will make that decision myself."

The verbal exchange continued with Gogoi urging Sarma not to get agitated, and Sarma expressing his frustration, which included longstanding grievances against Gogoi's family dating back to 2010. He expressed confidence in settling the matter in court, citing past successes in 2016 and 2021, and his determination to do so once again.

As the political feud intensifies, Gogoi has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate an inquiry into the alleged ₹10 crore government subsidy claim. In a pointed message, Gogoi reminded Sarma that addressing the issue in the assembly is not a privilege but a duty owed to the people.

The ongoing clash between Assam's Chief Minister and a Congress MP has captured the nation's attention, and as both sides stand their ground, it remains to be seen how this controversy will ultimately be resolved.
