Cattle Preservation (Amendment) Bill passed in Assam Assembly

Guwahati: During the ongoing winter session of the Assam Assembly, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government has always vouched for cattle protection and restrict cow smuggling. The state government has never discouraged cattle rearing for agriculture economy.

“We are looking forward to put an end to cow slaughter in the state. There have been queries as well as complaints from people who have faced troubles at the hands of the police while trying to transport cattle to other districts. We just want to clear that confusion and restrict the police role in such cases,” said CM Sarma.

“Our government strives for development. We have never restricted cattle rearing for farming purposes. We just want to put an end to cow smuggling taking place alongside Bangladesh border,” added CM Sarma.

CM Sarma has made it clear that no bills regarding buffaloes have been decided by the government yet. Further speaking on the Bill, CM Sarma said that those dealing in illegal cattle trade, will be strictly dealt with, inviting heavy penalties and punishments under the law. The police stationed along the borders have been given the free-will to seize such vehicles and auction them off.

“The state has to now unite against crimes against people as well as crimes against animals,” added CM Sarma further during his speech.

Assam CM further mentioned that the government is trying its best to help farmers in the agricultural development. The recent agri-project initiated by the state government aims to increase milk production of the state.

Stating that most of the people in the state are involved in beef consumption, the production of milk will in-turn help benefit the economic sector of the state. Adding further, “Today’s amendment is not inter-state but intra-state”.
