Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma provided an update on the number of arrests made in the state as part of the crackdown against child weddings on Thursday.
According to CM Sarma, as many as 2,666 arrests have been made in the subject across Assam. The count has risen from 2,441 arrests on February 6.
The Assam Chief Minister turned to Twitter to announce the arrests.
"Our war against child marriage continues," he stated, "with 2,666 arrests made so far."
"The fight against this social scourge will continue. We request the people of Assam's cooperation in our fight against this social crime," he added.
Earlier on Monday, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state had made 2,441 arrests in connection with child weddings.
"Total arrests so far - 2441," wrote Assam CM. In #assam, the crackdown on child marriage continues." CM Sarma updated the number of arrests in the case so far on Twitter today.
It should be mentioned that as of Sunday, February 5, the overall number of arrests in Assam stood at 2,278. According to Assam police data, 139 people were arrested in Biswanath, 130 in Barpeta, 126 in Dhubri, 123 in Baksa, 117 in Bongaigaon, 101 in Nagaon, 94 in Kokrajhar, 85 in Kamrup, and 84 in Goalpara and Udalguri districts.
The manhunt began on February 3rd, in response to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's directive to end child marriage and arrest the accused.
Meanwhile, the Assam Chief Minister has warned that the crackdown on child marriage will continue until the 2026 state assembly elections.
The police recorded a total of 4,074 cases involving child marriage.
The CM had directed the police to investigate after receiving information that child marriage was widespread in the state.
