Darrang: A contractual government photographer who was himself captured on camera brutally attacking an incapacitated protester in yesterday’s Gorkhuti eviction violence incident, has been arrested by the police on Thursday evening and sent to CID’s custody.
An extremely violent and hostile situation erupted in Dholpur No.3 under the Sipajhar revenue circle in Darrang district, when officials with police personnel reached the place to begin the second day of eviction drive.
Encroachers started protesting, leading to a hostile situation in the area following which the police had to resort to tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the mob.
The protesters began pelting stones at the police personnel, due to which few of the police men received injuries. Suddenly, a protester was seen chasing the photographer, while, a team of police personnel stopped the protester and took him down on the ground. As the protester lay unconscious on the ground, the photographer identified as Bijoy Shankar Baniya jumped on the protester’s chest and punched him brutally in the brief video which is going viral across social media.
Bania was stopped by the police, but he returned back to attack the severely wounded protester once again.
The protester later succumbed to his injuries, said the police.
Meanwhile, two persons have died of bullet injuries while several others including at least eight police personnel have been wounded.
As per reports, the deceased has been identified as Saddam Hussain and Sheikh Farid. One policeman Maniruddin Ahmed sustained severe injuries and he was rushed to GMCH from Mangaldai Civil Hospital in critical condition.
