    Death Of Detainee in Assam Police Station Sparks Public Outrage, IC suspended

    Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh stated on Thursday that the In-Charge (IC) of Khelmati Police Station in Lakhimpur district has been suspended following the mysterious demise of a detainee while in police custody.

    Digital Desk: The death of a detainee within the Khelmati Police Station in Assam's Lakhimpur district on Wednesday night has sparked widespread outrage among locals. 

    The deceased individual, identified as Arsabh Ali (42), hailed from Lakhimpur's South Chandmari locality. 

    Allegedly, Ali was brought to the police station by the Khelmati police regarding a stolen mobile phone, as he was suspected of purchasing it from a theft gang he allegedly led. 

    According to police sources, Ali suddenly fell ill inside the station premises and collapsed, leading to his demise. 

    Following the incident, Ali's family members and locals of Khelmati have demanded justice, claiming that he was fatally assaulted by the police at the station.

    Meanwhile, Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh stated on Thursday that the In-Charge (IC) of Khelmati Police Station in Lakhimpur district has been suspended following the mysterious demise of a detainee while in police custody. DGP GP Singh shared this information on platform 'X', revealing that IC Dipankar Changmai, along with an on-duty sentry at the time of the incident, has been suspended. 

    Additionally, the Assam DGP disclosed that an independent inquiry has been initiated by the Additional SP of Biswanath. GP Singh assured that all necessary legal procedures have been adhered to.


    “Reference death in police custody at Khelmati OP District North Lakhimpur - 1. IC of Khelmati OP has been placed under suspension along with on duty sentry at time of incident. 2. Independent Enquiry has been ordered by Addl SP Biswanath. 3. All mandatory provisions of law & directions of NHRC/AHRC are being followed 4. DIG NR has been directed to proceed to Khelmati immediately,” read his post on ‘X’.
