Digital Desk: Three students who were involved in the ragging of a first-semester M. Com student at Dibrugarh University were arrested by the police on Tuesday. The victim student, identified as Anand Sharma, reportedly jumped from the second floor of the PNGB hostel on Saturday as he was unable to tolerate the brutal physical and emotional harassment of senior Dibrugarh University students.
Meanwhile, Dibrugarh University authorities expelled 22 students from the university hostel on Monday for their involvement in ragging. Three other students who were arrested in connection with the event were temporarily barred from attending courses until the investigation was completed. Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu has ordered a magisterial investigation into the event, which will be led by ADC Sanghamitra Baruah.
"It has come to notice that a Dibrugarh University student is hurt in an alleged case of ragging. Close watch maintained & followup action coordinated with district administration. Efforts on to nab the accused, victim being provided medical care. Appeal to students, say NO to Ragging," said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet.
State Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu condemned the incident on Monday and urged the police and Dibrugarh University administration to take stern action against those responsible. "We will not allow such behaviour. I am also requesting that university authorities be watchful and take quick action whenever ragging attempts are reported. Hostels shouldn't allow ex students to stay there," he said.
Anand Sharma, a first-semester M. Com student and boarder at the Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Chatra Nivas (PNGB hostel), was allegedly harassed by senior students, including a former Dibrugarh University student, between 4.30 p.m. of November 26 to 5 am on November 27.
Unable to bear the torture, he jumped off from the second floor of the PNGB hostel's B Block on the excuse of going to the bathroom to save himself from the terrible physical and emotional anguish. Sharma was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital after suffering severe injuries due to the incident.
The victim's mother, Sarita Sharma, a resident of Amguri in the Sivasagar district, filed a FIR at the Dibrugarh police station on Sunday night, naming several Dibrugarh University students, including Rahul Chetry, a former Dibrugarh University general secretary.
Swinging into action, the police detained three accused, Pranjit Boruah, Niranjan Thakur, and Simanta Hazarika, from the hostel on Sunday night, following which they were arrested and sent to jail.
