Digital Desk: The Dibrugarh District & Session Judge court rendered the judgement in the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) murder case on Thursday, after a nine-year delay, by awarding life imprisonment to the guilty ward boy in the case. Kiru Mech, the ward boy, was condemned to life in jail under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPL).

Earlier on Wednesday, the court acquitted the main culprit, Dr Deepmoni Saikia, of murder charges while convicting the ward boy who assisted him in carrying out the murder plan of Sarita Toshniwal, a college medical student.

Notably, the plot to murder Sarita was devised in April by a doctor named Deepmoni Saikia, who was a second-year PG student in the obstetrics and gynaecology department at AMCH and was carried out with the assistance of a ward boy named Kiro Mech. Deepmoni and the deceased used to work in the same department.

"Deepmoni and Saikia had a friendly relationship." However, they had not been on good terms in recent months. Deepmoni used to call Sarita on her mobile, but she never answered. He wanted to exact retribution after being rejected by her. He devised a strategy and enlisted the assistance of Kiro Mech. He duped Kiru by promising to make his position permanent. He even threatened to dismiss him if he refused," police said after apprehending the suspect.

About the Incident: 

"On May 8, Deepmoni and Sarita were assigned to night duty, but Deepmoni was absent due to illness." Sarita was the only one on the job. A ward boy and a nurse were also present. Deepmoni and Kiru perpetrated the crime the next morning (May 9) after the on-duty nurse left," police stated.

According to the authorities, Kiru tried to choke Sarita in her sleep, causing her to scream. Deepmoni then pinned her to the ground as she fought to wiggle free.

The perpetrator was not satisfied with killing her, so after performing the crime, he removed the victim's clothes and assaulted her, reported the police.

The heinous murder provoked anger across the state. The investigation was later handed over to the CID.
