Digital Desk: In an effort to make the streets of Assam accident-free on the New Year's eve, the Assam Police has been carrying out a week long drive against drunken driving. To look into the operations carried out by the Assam Police on drink and drive case, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took stock of the drive in Guwahati last night.

Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Guwahati Club, Bhangagarh, Chandmari, Zoo road, Ganeshguri and Ulubari to review the campaign initiated by the government to prevent accident cases due to drunken driving.

During the inspection, the Chief Minister also instructed the city police and administration to launch such drives in various picnic spots in Guwahati and other parts of the state, especially drivers who need to be examined while ferrying passengers to and from various picnic spots.

He even instructed the administration that if any driver is found drunk, the picnicers need to be sent to the spot with another driver.

Himanta Biswa Sarma also visited Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to take stock of the accident situation but to his surprise, he found out that not a single accident case was reported last night. “I visit GMCH every year on December 31 and noticed several cases of accidents on New Year but this year the scenario is different. The hospital has not registered any case till my presence in the hospital,” he said in a Twitter post.
