    Follow COVID-19 protocols strictly or face a total lockdown; Assam CM warns people of the state

    GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has warned the people of the state that the government would again have to impose a total lockdown, if the COVID-19 protocols are violated and rules not strictly adhered to, by the people.





    CM Sarma however said that the government is contemplating relaxing the restrictions more from the first week of September.





    The chief minister said that as the number of COVID-19 cases is on a declining trend, the government is planning to open schools, colleges and start plying long-distance buses, but at the same time, he warned that the government would have to do just the opposite and consider imposing a total lockdown if the COVID-19 protocols are violated.





    CM Sarma requested the people of the state to follow the COVID-19 protocols set by the government strictly and avoid a more complex situation.





    Meanwhile, Assam recorded 586 fresh cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, pushing the tally to 5,88,025 while the active caseload in the state came down to 6,087.





    Kamrup (M) district reported 123 fresh COVID-19 positive cases, Golaghat 71, while Barpeta and Jorhat districts recorded 36 cases each.





    On the other hand, a total of 675 patients recuperated from the disease during the period, taking the total number of recoveries to 5,74,955, with a recovery rate of 97.78 percent.





    The COVID 19 death toll rose to 5,636 as the state witnessed nine new coronavirus-related deaths on Saturday.





    Of the new fatalities, four were reported from Barpeta while Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Kamrup (M), Kamrup and Nagaon districts recorded one death each.





    As many as 84,785 COVID-19 tests were conducted yesterday with the positivity rate being 0.69 percent.





    The state has so far tested a total of 2,14,67,875 samples for COVID-19.





    On the other hand, Assam has so far inoculated 1,70,08,714 people.





    Of them, 1,39,83,925 people have received the first dose while 30,24,789 people have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
