Digital Desk: Former Assam Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta is set to make a significant political shift by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on January 28, according to sources.

Alongside her, three other prominent leaders—former Congress MLA Bismita Gogoi, ex-president of All Assam Student Union (AASU) Dipanka Nath, and former AASU vice-president Prakash Das—are also expected to join the BJP on the same day.

This move follows Angkita Dutta's recent snub by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam.

On January 18, despite her efforts to meet Rahul Gandhi and seek justice, her attempts were in vain as Gandhi's convoy passed without granting her an audience. This incident raised questions about the Congress party's internal mechanisms in addressing serious allegations and prompted discussions about justice within political organizations.

Angkita Dutta faced expulsion from the Congress party on April 22, 2023, with a six-year suspension from its primary membership. This action was taken following her allegations of sexual harassment against Indian Youth Congress president Srinivas B. V.

Despite her suspension, Dutta remained optimistic that Gandhi's yatra, which aimed to address injustices and promote a more equitable society, would bring her the justice she sought.

In a broader political landscape, the impending defection of these leaders to the BJP reflects the evolving dynamics within the state. Additionally, former Congress leader Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee is set to join the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on January 29, further highlighting the realignments in Assam's political landscape.
